Torus

I’ve never really experienced surround sound before, never had the opportunity to work with it as intimately as I have with the Torus installation.” Justin, Torus Participant.

In 2016, we organised four paid work experience placements for young people with Flow Conceptions’ Torus project, an audio-visual work of art that has been toured extensively around UK festivals.

The participants were taught about the evolution of generative and procedural art. These forms of art are created automatically by technology while people are interacting with it. When people stood inside Torus and spoke into a microphone, unique patterns of light and sound surrounded them. The users were creating these patterns and sounds using their voice.

The participants also discussed how this type of art could develop in the future, and were introduced to new programming techniques. They then organised an exhibition of the Torus project at The Hive in Dalston, London. You can see footage from the event and the work experience placement in our video about Torus, which you can watch here
